Read this book because you're interested in getting a glimpse of a different world view--don't read it because you are looking for a great mystery. Most of the tales are more mysterious than they are mysteries. More about an odd circumstance than the detection. I picked it up because I am writing a mystery and am always curious about the genre. It's not great writing but it is a fascinating look at how a turn of the century (the one before) world.I noticed two things:
1. highly exaggerated characters/emotional dramas--Father's exiling children, parents dueling to the death, abandonded children--gothic and melodramatic.
2. Women were portrayed as powerful--either for good or evil. Men couldn't resist their wiles.
It's an easy read--if you are interested in the time period.

I'm not going to rate all of the Anna Katharine Green books I've read, but I've read several, and every one of them is great! Very entertaining. About like reading an Agatha Christy, as far as reading level, though most are considerably longer, so if you're an "I've got to read this in a day" type, like I am, you might not make it. Sometimes I skip several chapters, just to find out "who done it", then go back and finish the other parts later. But very enjoyable light reading in all her books!
Usually I enjoy the Victorian sleuth style books, but this was a bit of a mishmosh for me. It was hard to read because the language was too involved. Flowery isn't quite the right word, but it came across as someone who loved that style of writing, and overused it until the actual tale was lost within. Also, Violet is never clearly defined. She is mentioned as a child, and rich, but whether she's 7 or 12 or 15 is never clear, as she always comes across as 25+. (She seems to be much older by the last story but again...we aren't given even a ballpark of how old). Because she doesn't really want to take the cases, either, she comes across as negative, or disagreeable, and perhaps snobbish.
This is a strangely wonderful book, and I must warn you not to judge it early on. Don't look down on the fashionable, fairy-like figure of Violet Strange, the New York debutant rushing heedlessly from tea to musicale to ball. And don't be to quick to find the first few society puzzles she solves mere bagatelles of detection. As case follows upon case, they grow increasingly dark and devastating to the participants - and to Violet.
Violet, too, is a mystery. Why should an elegant little rich girl be so greedy for money? She earns large sums as an undercover agent for a private investigator - and always wants more. What secret is driving her to an employment that she finds distasteful - and that would infuriate her father if he knew of it?
There are nine stories - and both singly and together they demonstrate Anna Katharine Green's great talent for weaving a complex plot. They often deal with emotionally charged matters - for example, finding a will worth millions that's been lost by a sleepwalker, or penetrating the horrid secrets of a room that's been walled off for generations. Eventually Violet will elucidate her own mystery. And there's a love interest for Violet besides - to add to the delights of this book.
The Golden Slipper was published in 1915, but the writing style has the charm and cadence of Victorian fiction. The plots are subtly enriched by Gothic motifs and Shakespearean elements - yet come across as realistic and believable.
Anna Katharine Green was herself a small, shy woman with traditional views and terrific earning power - much like young Violet Strange. Miss Strange may well be the most intimately revealing of Green's many fascinating detectives, male or female. She approaches her cases with a spontaneous, self-effacing intelligence that feels very real.
Green is credited with inventing the idea of the detective series. This book is remarkable for being a series in miniature, containing mysteries within a mystery - a truly sophisticated and original fictional performance.
Anna Katharine Green influenced Arthur Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie. Some of her books are less polished than others, but for me The Golden Slipper ranks among her best work. Other favorites of mine are The Leavenworth Case, The Circular Staircase, and That Affair Next Door - all full-length novels of detection.
